"The cannon fired at sunset to mark the breaking of the Ramadan fast."

Each evening in Ramadan a cannon is fired at the exact moment of sunset — the signal that the day's fast is over and iftar can begin. A centuries-old Gulf and Egyptian tradition, kept alive in Dubai at several locations including Burj Khalifa and heritage sites.

These days most people break their fast by the call to prayer or a phone alert, but the boom of the cannon is the sound that still says: now, eat.
