At the sound of the cannon (or the call to prayer), Dubai transforms for about two hours. Dates first, always — usually with water or laban. Then soup, then everything else. Hotels turn their lobbies into iftar buffets. Streets around mosques fill up. The atmosphere is genuinely warm; even non-Muslims are welcomed at most iftars. Book ahead if you want one of the good ones.
