Dhows carried trade from the Gulf to East Africa and India long before Dubai was a city. The abra is a small cousin. The large dhows you see at Dubai Creek carrying cargo still do real commercial work. The dinner dhow cruises are tourist, but the boats are genuine. Traditional dhow-building (using mainly Indian teak) continues in a handful of yards.
