Shamal.
/sha-maal/· n. · Arabic ('north')social
"The northwesterly wind that hauls dust and sand across the Gulf."

Named for the direction it comes from, the shamal blows down over the Gulf and kicks up dust and sand, turning the sky a flat beige and coating every car in a fine film. It can last hours or days, most often in summer.

It's why some 'cloudy' Dubai days are actually dust, and why washing the car the day before is a small act of optimism. Hard on anyone with allergies.
