In Islam, haram describes what is explicitly forbidden: pork, alcohol, interest on loans, certain behaviours. In casual usage it's expanded to mean shameful, a pity, or wrong — haram, he's so young (what a shame, he's so young). The casual and the religious uses are tonally distinct; they don't usually get confused.
